The idea for this partially came from the swamp area (Killbuck) that I drive through on my way to the day job, especially all those dead trees sticking out of the water. But the design was also somewhat influenced by the look of a fountain, which is why I placed the subject in the center and gave the shoreline a smooth, slightly curved look. The tree is dead, and the dragon is actually causing the little flowers to grow. ^^

This was the first watercolor painting I’d done in a long time. I had more fun working on this than I usually do with acrylic paintings, but it was one of those pieces where I just didn’t know when to stop – there was always just one more application of paint needed. Then when I finally finished it, it took me over two weeks to get the scanned image to look good because apparently my scanner doesn’t like watercolor paintings. :pissedoff:

I did the background while I was at an outdoor event, and it was totally unplanned and undesigned. I knew I wanted a forested setting, but a lot of the work was done from memory. I kept it loose and washy so that the foreground elements would stand out better, and some photos my mom took on a fishing trip served as basic guides. I also discovered a little trick I could use (and you can see this on the pixies’ wings) to make an area of color paler: I mixed a tiny amount of water with some masking fluid, then painted it over the area I wanted to make lighter. After it dried, I would just rub off the masking fluid and it would pull off some of the paint, making the area lighter.

EDIT: Made more improvements to the image so it looks more like the real painting. :)
