Before anything, I have to say that this is one of my favorite paintings. The idea is of a young dragon wrapping up its first day of learning to fly… the pixies are probably just being curious.
I did this using a new technique for trees I discovered, and it was a major challenge to complete. I painted the more distant trees first, using very little detail and duller colors, then worked my way forward, using brighter colors, higher contrast, and more detail as I did. When it came time to paint the dragon, I couldn’t decide what color to make its wings- yellow or fuchsia. I had to scan it onto the computer and test color it before I could make a final decision.
There's something about your pink skies that draw me into them. I love this.
