The idea for this came to me out of nowhere, but I think of it whenever I see a distant bird flying in a cloudy sky. This was my first feathered dragon, and its overall design was inspired by various species of hawk (particularly red-tailed). There was lots of learning with this one: this was my first time painting feathers or close up clouds, and it had been a long time since I painted fur, although I really like the way the fluffy chest fur turned out. ^^
I didn’t really know exactly how I wanted the markings on the wings to look until I finished painting the dragon’s body; my original idea was somewhat different from the way it looks now. The clouds were referenced from life, while the dragon’s wings were referenced from photos of a Galapagos hawk. I also studied turkey and hawk feathers for the detail work.
